On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center in Chennai proudly celebrated the inauguration of its first-ever Chanoyu course, marking a significant milestone in the city’s cultural landscape. This groundbreaking course, a collaboration between Dahlia Authentic Japanese Restaurant and Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center, was inaugurated with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a revered practice symbolizing harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

The prestigious event was graced by the presence of Mr. Takahashi Muneo, the newly appointed Consul-General of Japan in Chennai, Ms. Mami Teraoka, Researcher/Advisor from the Consulate- General of Japan in Chennai and Mr. Jotish Kumar K, CEO of SRM GLOBAL CONSULTING, was also honored, further emphasizing the importance of this cultural exchange.

This Chanoyu course, the first of its kind in Chennai, offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to delve into the intricate traditions of the Japanese tea ceremony under the expert guidance of Tea Master Norie Ohga Sensei. Representing the esteemed Omotesenkei tradition, Ohga Sensei brings over 54 years of experience in the art of the tea ceremony, making this course a unique learning experience for all participants.

A Masterclass in the Omotesenke Tradition

Norie Ohga Sensei, originally from Nobeoka City, Miyazaki, Japan, and now based in Bangalore, is a Shihan certified in the Omotesenke tradition. With her extensive expertise, she has been sharing the art of Chanoyu in Bangalore since 2010. The Omotesenke tea ceremony, known for its seven levels of mastery, offers students a structured and profound journey into this traditional Japanese art form.

The inaugural course at Hayakawa focuses on the Nyu-mon level, where students are introduced to the basics of the tea ceremony, including Warigeiko (basic exercises), Ryakutemae (light and thick tea preparation), and foundational knowledge of the tea ceremony. This comprehensive approach ensures that students gain a deep understanding of the customs, rituals, and etiquette that define this centuries-old tradition.

A Cultural Feast for the Senses

The event was further enriched by a meticulously prepared Japanese-style boxed meal, or bento, provided by Dahlia Authentic Japanese Restaurant. The bento featured a delightful array of traditional Japanese dishes, perfectly complementing the tea ceremony and offering guests a full immersion into Japanese culture.

With an initial group of five students, the Chanoyu course is set to expand, with new batches commencing every two months. This offers ample opportunity for more enthusiasts to engage with this refined art form and deepen their appreciation for Japanese culture.

Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center invites all those interested in exploring the rich traditions of Japan to participate in future Chanoyu courses. Whether you are a seasoned tea enthusiast or new to the art, this course provides a rare opportunity to learn from a true master and experience the beauty and tranquility of the Japanese tea ceremony.
