The New Year at Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center began on a vibrant note, embracing the rich cultural heritage of both India and Japan through a series of remarkable events. These events showcased the harmony and connection between the two nations, offering a unique platform for cultural exchange and appreciation.
On January 15th, Hayakawa hosted traditional Pongal celebrations, marking the Tamil harvest festival with joy and enthusiasm. The event showcased Tamil culture and traditions, offering a unique cultural experience to our Japanese guests. Students and staff enthusiastically participated in preparing the traditional Pongal dish and decorating the premises with colorful kolams. The celebration was a perfect blend of cultural exchange, symbolizing the essence of unity in diversity.
On January 21st and 22nd, Hayakawa organized the much-anticipated Shimin Chakai, a public Japanese tea ceremony, in collaboration with Dahlia Authentic Japanese Restaurant. The highlight of the event was the presence of renowned Tea Master Ohga Souin-sensei from the Omotesenke Domonkai International Association, Bengaluru. Ohga-sensei conducted the traditional Chanoyu, captivating the attendees with the grace and precision of this age-old Japanese art form.
On January 22nd, Hayakawa had the honor of hosting a special Sado (Japanese tea ceremony) graced by His Excellency Mr. Kenji Miyata, the Deputy Consul-General from the Consulate General of Japan in Chennai. We prepared koicha (thick tea), which was served along with traditional Japanese wagashi (Omo-Gashi). Koicha is a rich and authentic type of tea, made by a generous amount of matcha with hot water. This intimate event celebrated the essence of Japanese culture and concluded with a delightful obento (Japanese lunch box) prepared by Dahlia Authentic Japanese Restaurant, leaving attendees with cherished memories.
The evening of January 22nd saw an elegant continuation of Shimin Chakai with special invitees Dr. Ajit Sankardas Mullasari, Director of Cardiology at the Institute of Cardio-Vascular Diseases, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, and his wife, Dr. Sulata Ajit, Founder Director of Sankalp - The Learning Centre & Special Needs School, Chennai. The couple’s presence added a touch of prestige to the occasion, further underscoring the cultural significance of the event.
The series of events highlighted the shared values of tradition, respect, and harmony that form the foundation of Indian and Japanese cultures. The team at Hayakawa, alongside Dahlia Authentic Japanese Restaurant and the esteemed Tea Master Ohga Souin-sensei, ensured the success of these events, leaving attendees enriched and inspired.
As Hayakawa continues to serve as a bridge between India and Japan, these cultural celebrations reaffirm our commitment to fostering mutual understanding and appreciation. Here’s to a year filled with more such enriching experiences!
